My Christmas decoration storage solution used to me more of a “Christmess.” Ornaments would be stored in their original, deteriorating boxes or trays, and I tried to awkwardly contain them in my rubber holiday bins but I was lucky if the lids would actually close. One year as I was unpacking ornaments, what should I find but a little (living) mouse who had been making himself cozy inside! The problem was that I was trying to keep the chintzy ornament boxes to protect the delicate glass items, but storing this way didn’t offer much protection if the lids of my bins can’t close properly. Plus, I didn’t want to have to buy even more bins to accommodate the seemingly growing collection. Enter the coffee cup sleeve!
For a year, I collected as many of these sleeves as I could. I place an ornament inside each sleeve, which serves to protect each one. I line the base of a rubber bin with bubble wrap, then fill a layer of ornaments, fitting together like honeycomb, and keep layering bubble wrap after each layer until the bin is full. I was able to recycle all of the old ornament boxes. Now I’m using fewer bins and my ornament storage footprint is so much less! For any oddly shaped or large ornaments, I wrap those in tissue or bubble wrap and save those for the top layer of the bin.
