Magic Bars

These cookie bars taste like yesteryear because they seem to be embedded in my memory banks as a childhood staple. I loved to take a spoon (still do) to scoop out the remainder of the sweetened condensed milk in the can before it was tossed. Though wonderful to taste right out of the oven, they only improve upon cooling and allowing to set before cutting.

Magic Bars

Ingredients

  • 2 cups graham cracker crumbs

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed

  • 2 cups chocolate chips

  • 1 cup coconut flakes

  • 1/2 cup pecans, roughly chopped

  • 1 14 oz can sweetened condensed milk

Recipe

1. Preheat oven to 350°F and butter 9″ x 13″ metal baking pan.

2. Combine graham cracker crumbs, melted butter and brown sugar in a mixing bowl. Mixture should hold together if pinched. Press into the bottom of the baking pan and use a measuring cup to tamp down the mixture until it is smooth and packed.

3. Sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the pan, then coconut, then pecans. Lightly tamp these toppings down to ensure a less crumbly bar. Pour can of sweetened condensed milk evenly over the top.

4. Bake 25-30 minutes. Allow to cool before cutting into bars. Magic!
