Bespoke Painted Champagne Bottles

A few months back, my cousin had the idea that she would like a special prop to feature in her upcoming graduation photo shoot: a hand-painted Champagne bottle depicting her new home city. She asked me if I could create this, and it was a creative challenge I gladly accepted! She had some inspiration for the artwork style she liked that gave me some NYC imagery ideas. There are also lots of examples online of painted Champagne bottles which seemed to be largely created for weddings depicting signature landmarks or iconic images of the wedding destination city (another great idea).

I first removed the paper bottle labels and taped off the gold foil to protect it from paint. Since I wanted the images to really pop, I opted for a white background. I spray painted three coats of white paint + primer and allowed to dry completely. I used acrylic paints to paint on the bottle, which worked really well. Acrylic paints would show up and adhere to the glass even if I hadn’t primed it with the white spray paint, but think the overall effect with the white background was best for this application, so that the bottle would show up well in the photos. Because her plan was to pop a bottle in celebration as one of the planned photos of the shoot, I painted two bottles just in case the first take didn’t work! I can think of worse things than having an extra bottle of Champagne…
