May Day

The tradition of the giving of flowers for May Day dates back to Roman times (see last year’s post). This May Day basket I created is a sampling of everything that’s blooming in my yard right now: tulips, hellebores, redbud branches, miniature daffodils, grape hyacinths and Japanese anemones. I nestled a low, wide bowl into a basket and used a vintage glass flower frog, which are very handy to have in varying sizes. They give your flower stems a place to rest to make your arrangement appear fuller. Keep an eye out for these at antique stores and resale shops. I criss-crossed the redbud branches in the bowl and the effect they create is of flowers spilling over the basket. Then I filled in the arrangement with the remaining flowers, tucking them in the frog and in-between the redbud branches. Happy May Day!
