Life’s too short to wear ugly anything; the same goes for these Christmas sweater sugar cookies. I love all cookies, but there’s almost nothing better than a beautifully iced and sprinkled sugar cookie. My sister, Christina, and I were inspired to decorate cookies when she came across Fancy Sprinkles. We decided to keep our palette neutral to let the sprinkles shine and create sweaters that we would actually wear (and besides, who wants green icing mouth?). We used the Martha Stewart Sugar Cookie recipe, Martha Stewart Royal Icing, and plain buttercream (recipe here, omit lemon, zest and liqueur).
Once baked and cooled, we used my favorite plastic squeeze bottles to pipe royal icing along the edge of the cookies, then flooded in the middle to create a nice, smooth glaze on the cookie. After about 15 minutes of setting time, we were able to use piping bags fitted with various tips to create raised decorative motifs on the cookies with buttercream. For some sweaters, we added extra embellishments with sprinkle designs.
