Ribbon-Wrapped Makeup Brush Holder

I am usually pretty good about not letting “things” accumulate, but there are just some things I cannot bring myself to discard or give away. Enter this heap of beautiful Hermès ribbon I had stockpiled with no real use for it until I thought it could be upcycled in a lovely way — into a pretty makeup brush holder that sits on my vanity! Here’s how I put it together.

First, I found a little pencil cup I wasn’t using and wrapped the ribbon around it to ensure I would have enough to cover. If there wouldn’t be enough, I would have just purchased a similar color and alternated it with the fancy ribbon all the way up. With the help of my trusty, mini hot glue gun, I ran a bead of glue the length of the cup.

I left a little bit to hang over the corner for nicer finishing.

As you can see here, I glued the little overhanging piece which gets covered by the ribbon that gets wrapped around.

Once I completed the first four turns around the cup, gluing each side as I went, I then angled the next level slightly up, securing with a dot of glue.

With the ribbon angled up and overlapping slightly, run a new length of glue and repeat around each side.

You can smooth the slight bumps out as you go, and this will be the corner that I’ll place to the back. The other three sides will be straight. You could also use an empty candle jar, which would not need to be “stepped” like a square cup needs to be. You would just wrap at a slight angle all the way to the top.

When I needed to start a new piece of ribbon once my first length ran out, I glued the second ribbon under the first ribbon to secure it, then glued the first ribbon to the second ribbon.

Keep wrapping until you have your cup covered.

At the top, I folded over my final ribbon layer and glued it to give it a nice, clean look and snipped the excess at an angle and tucked the end into the interior corner.

Of course, you don’t need a luxury-branded ribbon to make this little DIY; pick anything that strikes your fancy! (Pardon the creepy little hot glue “spiderwebs” I didn’t notice until now.)
