If you’re curious about sewing, and would like to learn how to make your own (fill in the blank), once you have a minimally stocked kit, and optional sewing machine (hand sewing is always an option), the world is your oyster.
I first got into sewing wanting to make my own napkins, and eventually made a circle skirt which I would give the grade of a B-/C+, but the point is to try and keep practicing! A few years back, my friend, Chrissy and I took a sewing class at Joann Fabrics, taught by a hilarious lady named Sue. She taught us proper cutting technique, how to read and cut out a pattern, pressing fabric and different types of seams, not to mention, all of her essentials for a well-stocked kit. The kit linked below contains some of the items mentioned, but I linked the missing pieces. Here are Sue’s sewing basket essentials:
Tape measure
Cutting shears (reserved for fabric so they don’t dull)
Box of pins (longer preferred)
Thimble
Awl/stiletto (to push fabric under sewing machine presser foot)
Seam ripper
Pencil (mechanical preferred, always sharp)
Good scissors (to snip threads)
Variety of hand sewing needles
Slide ruler and seam guide tool(seam allowance when cutting a pattern is 5/8″ and this tool helps with that measurement)
Chalk pencil
Extra bobbins
